Yes, You Can Do Shower
and Bathtub Refinishing Yourself

Educate Yourself Before You Attempt DIY Bathtub Refinishing

Affordable Refinishing doesn’t sell refinishing or reglazing products for do-it-yourselfers, because we don’t recommend the do-it-yourself approach to tile, shower, and bathtub refinishing. Other companies do offer products you can buy. Before you tackle such a project, however, make sure you understand the dangers, take adequate precautions, and be prepared for what can go wrong.

  • Toxic fumes: No matter which brand of reglazing or refinishing products you purchase, the fumes are toxic. They can endanger you, your family, and your pets. Fume exhausting equipment and a full-face respirator are required.
  • Stripping any existing refinishing: If the surface you’re refinishing has been refinished previously, it requires stripping. This process causes additional toxic fumes, and the same precautions are required.
  • Smooth finish: Do-it-yourself kits and products are typically applied with a brush or roller. If you follow the instructions exactly, the finish will be adequate, but it won’t be smooth and glossy. To obtain a like-new finish, the coating must be sprayed with professional equipment.
  • Color matching: Do-it-yourself colors cannot be color matched. So you may finish your bathtub and then want to match a sink, and that won’t be possible. There isn’t anything wrong with that; you should just be aware of this fact.
  • Read the reviews: Before purchasing any materials, make sure you read the reviews and be reasonably sure the reviews are legitimate. We have yet to find a DIY bathtub refinishing product with any long-lasting, good reviews.
  • Higher costs to fix: If your do-it-yourself bathtub refinishing project goes wrong, and you decide to call in a professional, it’ll cost more to remove the failed finish and then apply a new finish.

For these reasons, Affordable Refinishing doesn’t recommend refinishing your bathtub, shower, tile, or other ceramic, porcelain, fiberglass, or other surface yourself. As a trained, licensed, and insured professional with nearly 20 years of experience, I can tell you that it’s not worth it. But if you decide to try it, yes, we can fix and refinish your surface for you at a later date.
